Astros Sign Wandy Rodriguez; Arbitration for Hunter Pence

Filed under:

The Astros announced Tuesday that they've avoided arbitration with Wandy Rodriguez by signing the lefty to a three-year contract that includes a vesting option for a fourth year. The first three years of the deal are worth $34 million; if the option vests it will add an extra $11.5 million to the deal. Since Rodriguez is entering his final year of arbitration eligibility in 2011, the deal will cover at least two years of potential free agency.

In announcing the deal, Astros GM Ed Wade called Rodriguez "one of the top left-handed starters in the game," and that's not as far from the truth as you might think. Over the last three years, Rodriguez has struck out 8.4 batters per nine innings and walked just 2.9 per. That's helped him to a 3.36 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP over that span that puts him pretty much on par with the recently-traded Roy Oswalt.
