Chris Evert returned to U.S. Open play this week, teaming with ESPN radio host Mike Greenberg in the mixed doubles competition at the U.S. Open National Playoffs Eastern Sectional Qualifying Tournament. The picture above is an accurate representation of how they did in their second-round match.
The unlikely pairing lost 6-1, 6-4 to the formidable duo of Bea Bielik and Darrin Cohen. Bielik won the 2002 NCAA singles championship while at Wake Forest and Cohen was a standout at the University of Virginia.
That picture was snapped after Greenberg accidentally drilled Evert in the rear with a shot. Both players found the incident to be highly amusing.
Evert last played in the real U.S .Open in 1989. This year, the six-time tournament champion was taking advantage of the new rule that allows anyone over the age of 14 to play qualifying tournaments for a chance to get a wild card into the tournament's main draw.
"It has always been Mike's dream to play in the U.S. Open, and I was happy to help him with his dream," said Evert.
It will have to be a tongue-in-cheek dream deferred. Greenberg says he'd like to partner up with Evert again in future years, but the two will have to do a little more winning in order to get into the main draw. They finished eight wins short of that "goal."
