It seems Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola might be starting to crack up thanks to the incessant, mind-humping banter with Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho that is accompanying their four meetings in 18 days. With Real riding the high of adding a broken trophy to their cabinet, Mourinho has upped his verbal game ahead of the upcoming Champions League tie. And it seems Pep can't keep up without turning into Wayne Rooney.
Said Pep during his Tuesday press conference (via Goal.com):
"He spoke directly to me, so I'll do the same to him. Tomorrow we'll take to the pitch at 20:45. Off the pitch he's beaten me," he said.
"In this room [the press area] he's the f***ing chief, the f***king boss, and I can never compete with that.
"It's the kind of game that I won't play because I can't do it."
So what did Jose say to draw out Guardiola's sweary concession? From the AFP...
But before [German referee Wolfgang] Stark was named [to work the Champions League match], Guardiola said Mourinho, who is Portuguese, would be "super happy" if Portugal's Pedro Proenca was chosen.
"Besides the naming of the referee and the pressure that they exerted that it was not Proenca, the most important thing is that we are in new cycle," Mourinho told a news conference on Tuesday.
"Up to now we have had two types of coaches. A very small group of coaches who never speak to the referees. After that, there is a bigger group, of whom I am one, who criticise the referees when they make huge errors. But it is also a group who are happy to highlight the good work of the referee.
"And now, with the declaration of Pep the other day, we are entering a new era with a third group, which for the moment includes only him, who criticise the correct decision of the referee," he said.
"This is something I have never seen in the world of football."
Mourinho's reaction to Pep's response? Probably something like this...
