Sorry, ladies, another free agent from the class of '11 is off the market.
As expected, Jeff Burton has re-signed with Richard Childress Racing in what RCR termed a "multi-year" agreement. At the same time, Caterpillar has agreed to continue to sponsor Burton's No. 31 Chevy, an agreement that began with the 2009 season. During that time, Burton has notched 11 top-5 and 25 top-10 finishes, though, uh, none of them this year.
Burton's new deal isn't exactly a surprise; he's made no secret of the fact that he's wanted to go ahead and get the deal done, which is good for stability but probably not the wisest move from a negotiations perspective. Still, The Senator is one of the indisputable good guys of the sport, justifiably regarded as the Smartest Man in the Garage (and that's not damning with faint praise, like "Nationwide championship points leader"), so it's good to see him getting the kind of respect he deserves.
Good, too, to see Caterpillar continuing in NASCAR. It's been a part of the sport since 1993, dabbling in Nationwide for a few years before committing toCup racingin 1997. It's run with Childress since 2009.
So, another free agent done. But with Carl Edwards, Mark Martin and others still out there, there's plenty yet to be decided.
