TAMPA - Dave Teggart swung his right leg and kicked a pie right into the face of the BCS on Saturday night. He kicked four field goals to lift UConn to a 19-16 win over South Florida. The last one was a 52-yarder with 17 seconds left.
"It was just like any other kick," he said.
Oh no it wasn't. This one clinched a BCS bowl for the Huskies.
Let me repeat that - UConn is going to a major bowl. Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Michigan State, Alabama and approximately 50 other higher-ranked teams are not.
Thank you, Mr. Teggart.
Your kick is the best evidence yet that the BCS should have the decency to jump off a bridge. Failing that, it should at least restructure itself so a team quarterbacked by Rebecca Lobo doesn't make the Fiesta Bowl.
Consider that the first of 5,204 UConn jokes you'll read in the next month. It's unfortunate since the Huskies are not to blame for this farce. They are a lovable bunch who just happened to be at the right place at the right time.
The right place is the Big East, which has no business getting an automatic BCS bid. The right time was 2010, when the league was so putrid that Pittsburgh almost got the prize.
