Zack Greinke has been traded to the Milwaukee Brewers. The deal will send Greinke and shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt to the Brewers in return for shortstop Alcides Escobar, pitching prospects Jake Odorizzi and Jeremy Jeffress and outfield prospect Lorenzo Cain. This is the second prospects-for-pitching swap made by the Brewers this year; they previously sent top prospect Brett Lawrie to Toronto in exchange for righty Shaun Marcum. With Marcum (3.64 ERA and an excellent 3.84 K/BB ratio coming off of Tommy John surgery last year) and Greinke joining Yovani Gallardo, the Brewers' pitching staff figures to be quite different than the one that finished 14th in the National League in runs allowed in 2010.
Still, the Brewers seem to be giving up quite a bit to get Greinke. Escobar struggled at the plate as a regular shortstop last year (.235/.288/.326), but he entered the season as one of the club's best prospects, he has a sterling defensive reputation, and he just turned 24 a few days ago.
Odorizzi, 20, was the Brewers' first-round pick in 2008 and he's coming off of a great year in Single-A that saw him strike out 135 batters in just 120 2/3 innings. Cain is a bit of a late bloomer, starting last year in Double-A but getting a chance with the Brewers late in the season and hitting fairly well -- .306/.348/.415 in 43 games -- with them in the second half of the season.
