Ryan Mallett: Will Miami Dolphins Take a Risk on Quarterback at No. 15?

Ryan Mallett Generating More Buzz as Draft Nears

As the 2011 NFL Draft nears, Ryan Mallett is starting to show up on the radar of most NFL teams.  The biggest reason for all the interest is because of his rocket arm and great size 6'7", 238 lbs. at the position.

But scouts have been conflicted on the power-throwing quarterback because of his character concerns related to his admission of drug use in college and general reputation as a malcontent.  Teams are investing millions of dollars on their draft picks and it's understandable if they shy away from the idea of drafting the next Ryan Leaf.

However, on team that may be willing to take a risk on Mallett is the Miami Dolphins. Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland tells USAToday's Sean Leahy:

Sometimes when there's information out there, you want to dispel rumors and get as much information that you can with any player out there, and that's why we went through the process...He's a nice young man, very talented kid, got a bright future.

The draft has historically proven to be an inexact science, talented players rise and drop on the boards for any number of reasons.  Now as we move closer to the big day, it's getting more and more likely that Mallett appears to have at least one interested suitor in the Dolphins.

Drafting him at No. 15 still seems to be a big stretch.  But the Dolphins have made no secret in their interest in making trades to fill their top priorities, which has to include quarterback and running back.  In which case a possible trade down could net them the chance to fill both needs, starting with picking up Mallett with a late first-rounder to early second-round draft pick.
