Canadian figure skater Eric Radford came away from his short program performance at skating's world championships with partner Megan Duhamel with more than a seventh-place finish. He also ended up with a broken nose.
Radford threw a spinning Duhamel in the air, but as she came down and Radford prepared to catch her, she came in too close. Still rotating, she popped Radford in the nose with her elbow. A cut instantly opened, and Radford's nose was broken.
The amazing part is that they continued their routine without any trouble, coming just a little more than a point away from their season's best score. Their 58.83 earned them a seventh-place finish in the short program, and they will skate for the championship on Friday. If figure skating doesn't work out for him, perhaps Radford can find a spot with the Vancouver Canucks, and Duhamel can use those elbows to follow in the footsteps of UFC fighter and fellow Canadian Georges St-Pierre.
2010 Olympic gold medalists Qing Pang and Jian Tong from China are in first place, followed by Germany's Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy, and Russia's Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov. American Caitlin Yankowskas and John Couglin are in eighth, and Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig are in 11th. Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch, Canada's other team, is in 10th.
