D12: Huzzah! Hall of Fame season mercifully drawing to an end

'Duk's Dozen, a selection of 12 morning-fresh links and items, has returned in 2011 to start your baseball news day. Got links? Send 'em here or via Twitter.

1. The first great baseball day in 2011 has arrived with today's announcement of the newest Hall of Fame class. And honestly, given all the non-stop bleating about steroids and suspicion the past few weeks, it really couldn't have come soon enough.

But despite all that contention, today's class additions to Pat Gillick should be rather anti-climactic. The top projections have Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven earning their laurel wreaths, while the perpetually outraged route Jeff Bagwell into Blyleven's place as the pet cause of the perpetually outraged who are outraged over the outrage. (Got that?) [AP]

2. MLB.com air the announcement live on the Internet. The channel's coverage starts at 1 p.m. ET, but the envelope won't arrive until 2. [MLB

3. "If Bert Blyleven finally makes the Hall, will we still need the Internet?" [Twinkie Town

4. It's not a popular decision in the Pacific Northwest, but Geoff Baker explains to Mariners fans why he left Edgar Martinez off his Hall of Fame ballot for another year. [Seattle Times

5. Of all the arguments that Tim Marchman uses to leer at Jack Morris' Hall of Fame case, I believe that his point about not even being the best pitcher on his RBI Baseball team rings truest. [Tim Marchman

6. Most of these made the rounds in 2010, but here's a good compilation of all the times that Adrian Beltre rebelled against the teammates who insisted on rubbing his head. [bosoxgifs]

7. This offseason is officially starting to seem long, because I could have sworn that Dan Uggla and the Atlanta Braves had already reached a contract extension. But apparently not, as the two sides just came to a five-year agreement worth $62 million. [AJC

8. John Mara, owner of the New York Football Giants, says he won't run his team like the Yankees. Which causes Lisa Swan to ask a very pertinent question: Why not? [Subway Squawkers

9. Danny Knobler goes all Nelson Muntz on Angels owner Arte Moreno. [CBS Sports

10. There are conflicting reports as to whether the Cubs are close to pulling off a trade for Tampa Bay pitcher Matt Garza. My money is on ESPN's Buster Olney being right. (He says a deal is not near.) [MLBTR

11. Great news for the second halves of the Washington Nationals' 2011 and '12 seasons: The team just signed the habitually late-starting Adam LaRoche! [AP

12. MLB Network's great piece on the 25th anniversary of Bill Veeck's death is maybe the best five minutes you'll spend all day. [MLB Network
