The Rockies and star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez have agreed in principle to a seven-year contract extension in the $80 million range, according to his publicist's Twitter account. The deal is pending a physical. Gonzalez is expected to travel to Denver this week to complete a medical examination and finalize the agreement.
"I can tell you that he is happy with the deal and (that) he thank(s) God for this new opportunity," said Gonzalez's publicist in a subsequent Tweet.
Tying up Gonzalez long-term continues an offseason trend for the Rockies, who also inked shortstop Troy Tulowitzki -- another young star that is a crucial part of their core -- to a 10-year, $157.75 million extension this winter.
Gonzalez, 25, finished third in NL MVP voting this past season after a breakout campaign in which he won the batting title with a .336 average and made a serious run at the Triple Crown with 34 home runs and 117 RBI.
