Berto will wait for 'Pac-Man' but DiBella says it's only fight that makes sense

Lou DiBella wasn't going to be obnoxious about it, but he did blurt out what many boxing fans are thinking about Manny Pacquiao's search for an opponent.

If Team "Pac-Man" must fight at welterweight why isn't Andre Berto the guy on their radar? The 27-year-old just mauled Freddy Hernandez with a first round knockout.

He's got youth, power and speed on his side. Instead, 39-year-old Shane Mosley or Juan Manuel Marquez, 37, may be the top targets.

Marquez is one of the great fighters who's ever lived … at 135 pounds! You can’t argue about the guy not deserving an opportunity," DiBella said. "But at 147, it’s not a fair fight. If (Pacquiao is) a welterweight then fight at welterweight."

Berto's promoter doesn't understand why Mosley is in the mix either.

"And honestly I think (Pacquiao vs. Berto) is a more sellable fight than Shane," DiBella said. "What’s the point of Shane? He lost every round against Mayweather. So what’s the point?"

DiBella said he'd be reaching out to Pacquiao's promoter Top Rank and Bob Arum soon.

"(Arum is) gonna go to Manny with a few options. We’re not going to price ourselves out, but we’re not chumps," said DiBella.

Berto (27-0, 22 KOs) wasn't quite as a vocal about getting Pacquiao first.

"At the end of the day, I'm only 27," Berto said. "I still have Miguel Cotto out there. I still have Shane Mosley out there. It’s whoever my team decides to lineup next."

Berto does think he's got a great shot against Pacquiao, who's been steamrolling bigger opponents recently.

"(Pacquiao) has a lot of speed and he has great legs. I think in these last few fights he's fought a lot of guys who stood in front of him. They were flat-footed, really slow and he just takes advantage of that," Berto said. "I just think there’s a handful of guys who can really keep up. Guys like myself and Floyd Mayweather, maybe Shane Mosley."

Unless the Pacquiao-Mosley talks turn into a circus, Berto has little shot of getting Pac-Man next. Top Rank probably recognizes that Berto is the most dangerous matchup at 147 and more importantly, the Haitian needs a signature win to capture the attention of the casual sports fan. A dominant win over Cotto could lead to a major promotion in late 2011.
