Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao is done for the season with a torn tendon in his right ankle, according to the Akron Beacon-Journal. Varejao will undergo surgery to repair the tendon after missing the Jan. 9 contest with the Phoenix Suns.
Varejao has been one of the league’s grittiest and best hustler players since entering the league. He has been a staple for the Cleveland Cavaliers, displaying excellent rebounding skills and defensive prowess.
Varejao is a tough-nosed player who will be sorely missed by the Cavaliers and their fans.
Varejao has actually been linked to trade rumors as of late.
There were rumors swirling in December that the New York Knicks would attempt to trade for Varejao if they were unsuccessful in their pursuit of Denver Nuggets superstar forward Carmelo Anthony.
In fact, the Knicks could have traded for Varejao regardless if they acquired Anthony. The Knicks are in desperate need of another player who is willing to get down and dirty in the post and toss his elbows around.
Clearly, that’s been thrown out of the window for New York with Varejao done for the season.
This is just another big loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. They lost the league’s top drawing superstar LeBron James in the offseason and were relying on their core to quickly rebuild and stay competitive to stick it to “King James.”
Another plan foiled.
Varejao was averaging career-highs this season with 9.1 points and 9.7 rebounds in 32:06 minutes. Varejao will look to come back with a vengeance next season and average that double-double finally.
