Jake Locker Was Considered A Top 10 Pick At One Point But Not Anymore
Jake Locker was believed to be in a two-horse race with Andrew Luck for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft at this time last year. My how times have changed.
Ryan Mallett always was considered a distant third in that race, and now it's a question of who drops farther on draft weekend.
Locker still could go in the first round, but he won't be a Top 10 pick. Locker didn't have a great 2010 season, and his senior week workouts weren't as impressive as the scouts were hoping for.
With Luck back in college for 2011, Locker should have had an easier path to the pros, but Cam Newton came out of nowhere and Blaine Gabbert popped up on the scene in the last month of the season.
Now with the draft a little more than two months away, Locker has the Combine and some private workouts to improve his draft stock. Here's the silver lining on this cloud. If Locker reacts well to adversity, he'll use the last few months as fuel to become the best quarterback in the league.
All of a sudden I like Locker a lot more than I did a few weeks ago.
